Yeah, It Has Been Awhile

Seems as if I procrastinate more and more. It has been awhile. A lot has happened. With an uncle's help, I have been remodeling the old home where my mother was born and raised. She deeded the place over to me earlier this year, as my retirement home. It was built in 1912 as a wedding present from my great-grandfather to my grandparents, I think. Mom inherited the "home place" and a few acres while her four brothers (or their heirs) each received about 53 acres. The entire tract remains in possession of the family.

We have gutted the kitchen and modernized it and created a second bathroom, this one with a shower. Also added sliding glass doors and other floor-length glass to back porch, plus added a two-car carport behind the house. Plumbing and wiring are being replaced, and central heat and air will be added. It will get vinyl windows and siding, too, plus insulation. And new paint in both bedrooms, etc. The new bath has wallpaper, and I plan to use some wallpaper in the hallway (which was divided to provide a spacious walk-in closet) and on the back porch-now-sun room. Eventually I would like to refurbish the old bathroom with its claw foot tub.

The project has kept me busy as I am the head painter. Cousins Lee (Lake Santee), Joe (Goose Creek) and Tim Stevenson (Jacksonville FL) have helped us, as has my uncle's crew member Tim Marthers. Bro-in-law Bo Bowman (Irmo) has also put in an hour or two on the job. Mom and sister Jeannie (Wise VA) have done a lot too---painting, wall papering, priming, etc. Local cousin and neighbor Wesley Stevenson Jr. brought food over one evening---just fried Maui-Maui.

Uncle Larry plans to finish major renovations today, but we are awaiting insulation people, vinyl contractor, and plumber/electrician to appear and do their thing.

Yeah, I am getting excited. Have already begun to mentally place furniture, etc. Uncle Larry and Tim M added an attic stairway and 400 square feet of attic storage space, above the old 11 foot ceiling. Ceiling was lowered before my time to 8 feet, so they have to build a three-foot stair between the lowered ceiling and the original one. They also added a sky light and an exhaust fan up there.

Like most of the rest of the state, we need rain in Fairfield County. It has rained once in the last four or five weeks, and a lot of grass is now brown.

Summer at work is at a fast pace. We registered about 200 new freshman last Thursday and Friday, so those were busy days.

Well, back to work. More later, and this time I hope it will not be more than two months before I post again..........
